ESL Vocabulary Activities – Flashcards

Learning how to spell lots of new words can be a long, slow process for ESL students.

So, I’m trying a new technique.  It’s flashcard learning from Quizlet. This lesson is for my advanced level students. It’s new for me. I will wait to see if the results are good.

Here is a link to the first set of flashcards. 15 words for this week’s homework.

Here is what to do.

1. Click the link. Go to the next web page.

2. You will see a picture. Say the word of the picture. Click the picture to see the word. Look at the 15 pictures.

3. Next, click on the LEARN button. It’s in a blue box. Here you can practice spelling the words.

Good luck.

  1. Hi there, I’ve used Quizlet a lot for studying Korean and it was a really great way of memorizing a lot of vocabulary fast. Flashcards are so effective, I wish language learners would use them more.

Another thing that I found useful, similar to flashcards, was writing vocabulary or sentences on a piece of paper, then sticking these pages all over my house. It sounds kind of funny, but it’s amazing how much “free” learning and memorization you can do just walking around your house, washing the dishes, going to the fridge etc. and seeing the language you are learning written everywhere. I think this was the best technique I found for getting a lot of new language into my mind, and without any conscious effort.

  2. Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell
and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her
ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside
and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
