ESL Trivia Challenge 2 Ebook

Good enough is the enemy.teach English with ESL trivia volume 2

Dear reader,

In my many years in South Korea, I’ve met two kinds of ESL teachers. They both have university degrees and are filled with dreams about the future. They also start off with aspirations about being an effective communicator and instructor.

After a year, one teacher burns out. Completely dissatisfied with her life. Can’t wait to get out of the country. I should also note that she did not invest in herself. She rarely took stock of her strengths and weaknesses as a communicator, never invested time or money to develop her skill set and never really considered the needs of her students. She decided that what she had was good enough and would endure a miserable job until the contract was over.

The other teacher had a different attitude. Teaching was a challenge, especially classroom management. But she was driven to improve herself. She was constantly on the look out for new resources and techniques that would help her be a better communicator and instructor. She wasn’t content with good enough. She wanted more. She always wanted to be better. That was her attitude both inside and outside the classroom. Life for her wasn’t always easy but it was interesting and fulfilling.

Which teacher best describes your approach to teaching and life? Are you passive or active? Becoming an effective and satisfied teacher requires action, verve and a few good resources.

I’ve got the resources. Did you bring your verve?

About the Author

Originally from Canada, Rob Whyte is a long-time resident of Busan, South Korea. A very, long time actually. A battle-hardened veteran of Korea’s ESL industry, he’s taught every kind of student – from cranky pre-kindergarten kids to cranky high school English teachers – over the past two decades or so, though most of his teaching experience is with elementary and middle school children as well as university students. Rob is a published author in the travel and tourism field and has written for international companies like Lonely Planet. He also writes ebooks for ESL teachers.

Here are two short stories he (uh, I) wrote for Lonely Planet about travel in South Korea:

THE LOW PREP, HIGH INTEREST FLUENCY GAME

ESL Trivia Challenge Volume 2 is a nifty classroom game that builds language fluency and knowledge at the same time. It’s also a handy back-pocket activity when you have ten minutes to prep for a 50-minute class that your supervisor forgot to mention. Simply print and go. No time-gobbling cutting, pasting, or formatting.

ESL Trivia is unique because the questions were written for non-native speakers. No obscure questions about American baseball heroes from the 1980s. No oddball grammar questions about relative clauses. No head scratching questions about Heidegger (damn you Trivial Pursuit). The content is related to the students’ experience, comprehension level and scope of knowledge.

There are 240 new questions. Compared to ESL Trivia Challenge Volume 1, the vocabulary is slightly higher and the content a bit more difficult (btw no cheesy repeats from Volume 1, in case you were wondering).

As in Volume 1, there are four categories of questions:

  • Social Studies
  • Science and Math
  • Art and Entertainment
  • ETC (English, culture and time)

In addition, the format and page layout are similar to Volume 1. Each page has ranked questions, from easy to hard. So, students of all levels can participate. I really like this part of the game – it’s inclusive. Nobody feels left out because the questions are too hard.

FLEXIBLE PLAY

ESL Trivia Challenge Volume 2 works well in classrooms, and private tutorials. In private classes, teachers can use one page per class. That’s a nice 10-minute diversion that keeps the class fresh. With 20 pages of questions, you get 2-5 months of material.

Here are two suggestions for classroom play.

  • There are 20 pages with questions and answers. These pages work well in a large class; divide students into teams of two. Two teams per group. Or,
  • There are an additional 20 pages with the same questions but no answers. These work well as a whole class activity, say with the questions projected on a large screen.

Game play is simple. The student answers a question and gets points: easy questions 1 point, medium 2 points and hard 3 points. For a 50-minute period, I usually require the winning team to get 30 points – with at least 6 points per category. But honestly, the students usually love the game so much, they stop thinking about the total points. They just battle to answer each question.

E-BOOK CONTENT

The cost is $2.99 USD. Is that a lot? Before you answer, consider that for the price of one latte, you get:

  • 48 pages in total.
  • 20 pages of questions and answers (great for small group work).
  • 20 pages with the same questions – but no answers. A useful format for homework or a whole class sponge activity on the classroom projector.
  • 4 categories of questions.
  • 3 levels of difficulty (from 1 easy to 3 a little challenging), so students of all English skill levels can participate.
  • 1 pdf file formatted for A4 and 8.5 by 11 inch printing.
