Main Idea

This video lesson helps ESL students improve English listening skills, especially for numbers. The ESL video also has a simple but powerful message for students learning English.

Improve Listening Skills

Part 1. Watch and listen to the video. Answer these questions.

  1. Each day consists of how many seconds?
  2. What does each second contain?
  3. What happens in the supermarket?
  4. What does the man decide to do in a single second?
  5. Each week consists of how many seconds?
  6. In the house, what is the couple eating?
  7. How many seconds are in a month?
  8. How many seconds are in a year?

Part 2. Pair Work Discussion

  • How does the couple’s relationship change?
  • What happens at the end of the story?
  • What is the main idea of the video? Do you agree or disagree?
  • What did you like about the video?
  • If you were the director, what might you have changed?

  1. Dear Marko:
I loved you video-listening-activity, but I couldn’t download it to take it to my class.. :(
I tried nearly everything, even searching for it in YouTube.
    It’s a great activity indeed.

  2. Hi Susanna,

This Rob, the brains behind eslwriting.org. Thanks for your comment. You’re right, the video “Seconds” is a great video and an awesome ESL listening activity.

Here’s a thought for your question. I don’t think you can download videos from Vimeo (the site that hosts the “Seconds” video. but, if you do a search for something like “capture Youtube videos” or “download Youtube videos” you might find a way to grab the video.

Normally, I would not like to suggest a way to download other people’s work but in some school systems (epecially here in South Korea) many school computers are blocked from accessing webistes, even proper, educational sites.

    Good luck with that.
