ESL Speaking: Week 7 Speaking Activities

For my ESL students, it’s week 7 of the semester. Next week is the mid-term English conversation exam. In today’s English class we will focus on a few ESL conversation activities to build and improve fluency.

Speed Talking

In this pair work exercise, the students choose a topic from the list below. Speak 20 seconds about the topics. The partner asks three questions. Change role. Repeat three times.

My room My friend This room
Milk Danger Oranges
Snow Money Holidays

Play Sports

This is a two-part speaking exercise. First, look at the list of games and sports below. Where do people do these activities? For example, people play basketball on a court.

The second part is a rapid Q and A drill. The purpose of this five-minute exercise is to practice past tense positive and negative questions and answers.

For example:

  • Did you meet your friends at a basketball court last weekend?
  • Yes, I met my friends at the school basketball court.
  • No, I didn’t meet my friends at a basketball court.
Football Tennis Chess Swimming
Ping Pong Horse Racing Skating Boxing
Volleyball Baseball Golf Weightlifting
