Learn English writing
This is week 9 of the semester. Here is the basic plan for this week.
- Quickly review mid term exam answers and scores.
- It is time to start fresh with new writing assignments.
- Improve the students’ ability to think critically (leadership analysis)
- More practice with a text analysis (Steve Jobs speech)
- Even more practice thinking and writing critically (TED Talk video analysis)
- Improve writing style by understanding how to write sentences with nominalizations.
Remember the Syllabus?
This class has two main goals: to help you describe things and ideas well. The first half of the semester was mostly about describing things. The second half of the semester will be mostly about ideas – especially writing logical arguments.
We will begin that writing adventure by learning how to write an argument based on criteria, claims, evidence and warrants. Once you learn this writing structure, you will be able to write logical and persuasive arguments for just about anything. Work or school.
A New Sentence Pattern
On way to improve your writing style is to use a mix of sentence types. That includes long and short sentences. Here is another pattern which can be used to give your paragraphs a better mix of sentences.
This sentence is called a nominalization. Click the link to read about nominalizations and get the printable worksheet.
