For my ESL students, it’s week 7 of the semester. Next week is the mid-term English conversation exam. In today’s English class we will focus on a few ESL conversation activities to build and improve fluency.
Speed Talking
In this pair work exercise, the students choose a topic from the list below. Speak 20 seconds about the topics. The partner asks three questions. Change role. Repeat three times.
| My room | My friend | This room |
| Milk | Danger | Oranges |
| Snow | Money | Holidays |
| Animals | Furniture | Coffee |

Play Sports
This is a two-part speaking exercise. First, look at the list of games and sports below. Where do people do these activities? For example, people play basketball on a court.
The second part is a rapid Q and A drill. The purpose of this five-minute exercise is to practice past tense positive and negative questions and answers.
For example:
- Did you meet your friends at a basketball court last weekend?
- Yes, I met my friends at the school basketball court.
- No, I didn’t meet my friends at a basketball court.
| Football | Tennis | Chess | Swimming |
| Ping Pong | Horse Racing | Skating | Boxing |
| Volleyball | Baseball | Golf | Weightlifting |
