3 Plus 3 Teacher Training Program: Week 1

Welcome to the class. Here is a collection of activities and materials for Week 1 of Rob Whyte’s TTP class to help the trainees learn English.

LEARN VOCABULARY

Look at the words and pictures on this ESL worksheet. Your task is to learn the words in 1 minute.

QUICK PRESENTATION

Here is my main argument for this class.

The world’s economic is changing rapidly. As a result new skills are required for young people to be successful. Korea has a long tradition of a globally mobile population. Today’s young people need to be mobile and survive in a very different cultural environment.

Therefore, young Korean students need to learn seven new “cultural” skills to be successful int he global economy.

Part 1 New World Economy

These notes highlight the changes in the new economy.

Part 2 Korean Mobility

This presentation is a brief history of Korean mobility. The main idea is to show that Koreans are very likely to move around the globe in the future because they have done it in the past, granted for various reasons.

THESIS AND HYPOTHESIS SENTENCES

Clear and effective communication will be an important part of this class. In order to improve your communication clarity you will need to learn and use two sentence patterns.

Thesis Sentence

This writing worksheet helps trainees learn and practice the thesis sentence pattern.

Hypothesis Sentence

Knowing how to write a hypothesis is a great writing skill. A proper hypothesis can summarize a lot of information in one short sentence. This writing worksheet shows students how to write one kind of hypothesis sentence.

CLASS HOMEWORK

Your homework is to:

  1. read the article “The Art of Failure”
  2. write an article summary
  3. write a thesis that describes the writer’s main idea
  4. write 2 to 4 hypotheses from the article
  5. write 8 – 10 comprehension questions which will be used in pair work to help your partners understand the main ideas of the story. Please do not write tricky, picky grammar questions. We’re all about main ideas in this class, not minutia.
