ESL WRITING SPONGE ACTIVITIES

Control is an important skill when learning to write with style. These two short writing exercises help English students learn how to control their writing with guided practice.

Writing Activity #1

  1. Sentence one must appeal to the senses.
  2. Sentence two must use three adjectives.
  3. Sentence three must start with an adverb.
  4. Sentence four must contain a connective (words that show a shift in time, a combination a or change).
  5. Sentence five must use exactly three words.
  6. Sentence six must be a question.

Writing Activity #2

Objective: ESL students write a six sentence paragraph. They cannot repeat a word, including contractions and articles.

Rules: The paragraph must make sense and demonstrate standard principles of a well structured paragraph (i.e. topic and unity). It should not be a simple collection of unrelated sentences.
