Fall 2013 Advanced Conversation Class: Week 4

Well, the long Chuseok holiday is over and I know my ESL students are ready to learn English again.

Let’s do a quick review of the main things we have learned so far in this class.

  1. We learned a way to think more creatively by using a method called Six Thinking Hats.
  2. We started to learn about critical thinking by understating arguments, claims and premises.
  3. We started to think critically by learning about 6 kinds of fallacies of relevance. Those fallacies were ad hominem, tu quoque, bandwagon, straw man, red herring, and begging the question.

FALLACY VIDEOS

Here are four ESL videos. Each video has a an argument which has a fallacy. What is the fallacy in each video story?

WORD VIDEO

There are many ways for ESL students to learn English vocabulary. Here is a video that teaches many words and phrases.

HOMEWORK

This week, my students have some reading homework. I would like you to read an article. Net week, we will discuss the article.

When you read the article I want you to think do three things:

  1. Summarize the writer’s main argument. What are the claims and the premises?
  2. Write down 5 comprehension questions.
  3. Make a 1 minute summary about the story.

The article is called The Trouble With Fries by Malcolm Gladwell.

You can read the long article here. Or, I made a shortened version for you to read (3 pages). Download that file here.
