Fall 2013 Advanced Conversation Class: Week 7

This week, the students will finish reviewing for the mid term exam. Those questions are on this question worksheet.

Here is a collection of arguments to review logical fallacies.

EVEN MORE FALLACIES

Read these arguments. Then rewrite the argument using the simplified sentence and identify the fallacy.

1 If I make an exception for you then I have to make an exception for everyone.

2 You should never gamble. Once you start gambling you find it hard to stop. Soon you are spending all your money on gambling, and eventually you will turn to crime to support your gambling habit.

3 Scientists cannot prove that global warming will occur. Therefore, it probably won’t happen.

4 You cannot prove that ghosts do not exist so they must exist.

5 Fred, the Australian, stole my wallet. I guess all Australians are thieves.

6 Since I’m not lying, it is obvious that I’m telling the truth.

7 The President does not want to buy the new fighter jet. I think that is a bad idea. I can’t understand why she wants to make our military so weak.

8. If they weren’t so stupid they would understand my point.

9 I think capital punishment is okay because the government is killing people who have already killed.

10 The bigger a child’s shoe size, the better the child’s ability to speak English.

EXTRA WORK

Here are a few tasks to help students review and build their vocabulary.

Word with two meanings.

Can you tell me …

  • something you are keen on these days?
  • something or someone you are suspicious of?
  • something or someone you are fond of?
  • someone you are proud of?
  • something you are tired of?
  • 3 things which you have not gotten round to yet?
