Power of Words

Are words powerful? Of course they are but I wonder if my students know that.

I encourage my ESL students to improve and expand their vocabulary.  That’s why I prepare vocabulary worksheets and puzzles, like this one. Knowing more words can help their writing and speaking skills. That is obvious. But sometimes the message is easy but getting the idea to stick is hard.

Power of Words

Maybe this ESL video lesson can help motivate my students. It shows the power of words. And the power of ideas which can be expressed in a different way. Enjoy.

Do You Know 5

Writing class students, here is your homework. Read the questions and answer the questions.

ESL Writing Worksheet

Why do this? Good writing requires fluency with words (good vocabulary and quick recall) and an understanding of word sounds and word parts.

Download the writing worksheet here: esl-fluency-activity-5.

ESL Writing Lesson – Mind Mapping

The purpose of this ESL writing lesson is to give students an opportunity to work in groups and use the three elements of paragraph style which we studied in class: strong opening sentence, logical organization and unity.

This writing lesson uses two pieces of media: a mind map to encourage detail thinking and a video for inspiration.

Cinderella Mind Map

Here is a mind map of the fairy tale Cinderella. Our writing class will be creating a mind map as a tool to help students write a creative story.

ESL Video Lesson

The next step in the writing lesson is to watch a video. Nuit Blanche is a short dramatic story about a man and woman who meet on the street. In this writing lesson, students will use this video as the basis for their creative story.
