- This week is the last chance to give me your writing. I have to return all writing by the end of next week. You need that writing and feedback to prepare for the exam. So, I suggest you come to my office to get your paper if you have time.
Summary of the Writing Course (5)
Here are the writing skills we have learned and practiced:
- strong first sentence with a creative story #1
- add emotion and details #2 (show me, don’t tell me)
- hero’s journey structure #3
- analyze a story – think about organisation and structure (Death by Scrabble)
- 4 kinds of sentences: appositives, simple, complex and compound
- using the correct verb tense
- editing skills (wordy sentences and unnecessary there is/there are)
- paragraph editing (punctuation, spelling and articles)

Part 1: Tiny Story (45)
This is a pair work writing exercise. It is challenging because you have to describe the action of a ball and line as they try to illustrate a concept. This exercise asks you to expand and improve your understanding of verbs.
- Get the writing exercise and video here.

- Work with a partner to write really accurate sentences.
- Review sentences on the board.

Hour 2
Quiz #1 Review (60)
Next week (week 7), you will have a quiz (Monday-Tuesday). The quiz is 10% of your final grade.
The questions on the quiz will help you prepare for the midterm exam, so you are studying for two assessments.
Part 1 Paragraph Editing
Purpose: show me you know how to find and fix basic text errors.
You will get a paragraph with many kinds of mistakes. Rewrite the paragraph. There is no need to add sentences.
- Add punctuation to create sentences.
- Fix the errors (i.e. spelling, subject verb agreement, verb tense, sentence structure and paragraphs).
- Divide the text to create short but useful paragraphs.

Part 2 One Paragraph
Purpose: show me you can write a short passage with basic writing skills.
Pick one thing. It might be a person, place or thing. Write exactly one paragraph and describe that thing. Your error-free paragraph should have three parts:
- An interesting first sentence. It makes the reader want to read more.
- Words that connect with at least 3 of the 5 senses. Show me, don’t tell me.
- Sentence variety (e.g. a mix of long and short sentences).
Part 3 Write Tight
Purpose: show me you know how to write concise (fewest words possible) and precise (accurate) text.
Below are 3 logic puzzles. One of these questions will be on the quiz. Read the questions and figure out the solution. Then write the answer.
Your answer will be graded as follows:
- the answer is correct and error-free
- the answer has concise sentences
- the answer uses precise verbs to describe action
Logic Puzzle 1
There is a monkey at the bottom of a well. The well is 30 meters deep. Each morning, the monkey climbs up three meters. Every evening, the monkey slides down two meters. There is no water in the well and there are no tools. How long will it take the monkey to get out of the well?
Logic Puzzle 2
You have a scale with two trays and nine marbles. The marbles look identical in size, shape and color but one is different. Eight marbles weigh 10 grams each. One marble weighs 11 grams.
How can you find the heavy marble by using the scale only two times?
Logic Puzzle 3
You are standing beside a well with 2 buckets. One bucket holds 5 liters of water. The other bucket holds 3 liters of water. How can you get exactly 4 liters of water using only these 2 buckets? You have no other tools and the buckets have no measurement lines.
Part 4 Appositive Sentences
Purpose: show me you know how to write an appositive.
Here are 4 pictures. You will have pictures like these on the quiz. For each picture, write one sentence with an appositive.
