ESL Conversation Activities

Hour 1 The Way We Are – Units 1a and 1b

Page 2 (20 min)

  • Part A. Listen and read quiz. Check answers.
  • Listen again to quiz. Review answers.
  • 1C – Paraphrase quiz questions and ask partner for his/her answers. “How about you?”
  • 1D – Read and check answers (adjectives and adverbs).

Verb Tenses (15 min)

Here is a quick review of some verb tenses that you will need to know for this exercise and a few others coming up in the book.

Page 3 – 2A grammar (15 min)

  • Read box.
  • Fill in blanks 2A.
  • pair work ask partner these questions.

Page 3 Speaking Naturally (15 min)

  • 3A. Listen and repeat. Listen for intonation.
  • Notice sound change.
  • 3B. Listen for intonation.
  • 3B Ask and answer with partner. Try to copy intonation.

Hour 2

Page 4 – 1A (15 min)

  • listening for different verb forms
  • listen to Dan’s story – no book
  • listen again with the book
  • read text no listening, highlight unknown words
  • check dictionary, make word list in notebook

Page 4 B1a and B1b (20 min)

  • Who do they admire?
  • 1A. Listen and read. Circle the answers.
  • 1A Listen and read again for BOLD words. Are these words positive or negative?
  • Circle unknown words. Build word list on board.
  • 1B answer vocab questions
  • 1C and 1D fill in blanks
  • check answers

Page 5 – 2 and 3 (20 min)

  • #2. Listen and read box.
  • adverbs make adjectives stronger
  • REALLY and PRETTY use these as adverbs in 4 sentences
  • 2A and 2B. Talk about people who have these qualities.
  • 3A Listen and fill in the blanks.
  • 3A Listen again.
  • 3C. pair work questions and answers.

  • review book report, dates and collect book titles (5 min)
  • prep and complete 4-3-2 fluency activity (30 min)
  • puzzle worksheet: CH sounds (10 min)
