Learn English writing.
This is week 7 of the semester. For one class it will be a short week because of the Wednesday holiday.
Exam Preparation
This week, the objective is to prepare for the mid term exam, which will be during week 8 (next week). Students can prepare for the exam by:
- knowing how to create cohesion in a paragraph (here, here and here)
- learning the eight parts of speech and being able to find examples in a text
- reviewing the vocabulary from the quiz #1 study paper
- practice paragraph editing (here and here)
- knowing the differences between correlation and causation
- understanding how to use your imagination and logical thinking powers to describe how a cause and effect relationship might exist (or not exist) even when you do not have much information
- rewrite and memorize three different storiews which you have written so far
A Few Notes
The exam will have five parts. For Parts 4 and 5, you will write long answers. This writing will be scored according to how well you include these writing elements:
- strong first sentence (or sentences) with a topic and controlling idea (see chapter 3 in the textbook)
- clear ideas
- good descriptive details that show me (don’t tell me)
- elements of cohesion
- sentence variety (e.g. a mix of simple, complex and compound sentences)
- good paragraphs and organization
- minimal errors (like grammar and spelling)
- a good connection between the start and end the story
Part 4 is a question about describing and explaining correlation and causation.
Part 5 asks you to rewrite one of your old stories. The exam question will ask you to rewrite one of these: the homeless guy, the woman in the coffee shop or the health and wealth story. I will chose which story you rewrite on the test, so I suggest you prepare all three.
Time
The exam will be 50 minutes. No extra time will be possible. So, you will need to come to the test prepared and ready to write, especially for part 5.
Extra Notes
Are words important?
Yes they are. Sometimes a few words can have a great impact because they change the way think. Here are a couple examples.
