Midterm Exam Questions
This week we will prepare for the midterm exam. (download this pdf for printing)
Part 1. Rewrite a Story
You will rewrite one story that you wrote before. The story will be one of these:
- Past actions – write a story with 2 or 3 actions that happened in different places at different times.
- Write a summary of Room 8. Include a description of character, plot setting, and the message.
Part 2. Writing, Thinking and Analysis
We learned and practiced a writing format that creates knowledge. We used this format for two murder mystery stories and a study of Korean food consumption patterns. That pattern was:
- Begin with a question
- Find evidence
- Create a rule
- Make a conclusion
Look at the data. Write a short report that explains something important. Use the same writing format as above.
Part 3. Find the hedges. Rewrite the paragraph with no hedges.
To the best of my knowledge, nobody blamed the oil spill on the workers. Apparently, the accident was caused by a problem with one of the pipes. The pipe likely had a small hole, which allowed dangerous gas to escape. This gas probably caused the explosion. About 40% of the workers were injured. The doctor said he believes most of them could be released from hospital in a few days. I talked to some wives of the oil workers. Many of the wives seemed angry at the company.
