Here is the plan this week to help my ESL students learn English writing skills.

  1. Discuss midterm exam answers and scores.
  2. Complete a compare and contrast analysis with abstract categories first and details second.
  3. Learn how to write an email message.
  4. Complete a data analysis writing exercise using the inquiry approach (i.e. question, evidence, rules, conclusion).
  5. Combine 2 and 3 – real life business writing exercise.

Email Messages

  1. Background data about email messages.
  2. Examples of bad email messages from prestigious hotels.
  3. Important parts of an email message.

Email Message Writing Exercise

In this exercise you are going to write an email message with two objectives:

  • write a professionally correct email message – looks good.
  • answer a customer message.

Steps

  1. read an email message from a customer.
  2. read two examples of compare and contrast writing styles.
  3. write a compare and contrast report which answers the questions.
  4. write it as an email message.

Write it on paper, but it should look like an email message.
